Discussion: Rayfa Padma Khura'in and Sebastian Debeste

    Posted: 24 Dec 2020 04:11 PM PST

Some discussion on the Court-Records-affiliated Discord server has me interested in launching a little conversation here as well, covering the topic of two characters from the Ace Attorney games past the original trilogy. As the title indicates, they are Sebastian Debeste of Ace Attorney Investigations 2, and Princess Rayfa Padma Khura'in of Spirit of Justice. And what better time for a Rayfa discussion than her birthday? Let's get into it.

It's been discussed plenty of times before that Sebastian and Rayfa are very similar characters. Both start out as arrogant and self-assured teenagers who believe their deductions and perspectives on the cases they appear in are absolute, unshakable truth, acting pretty unbearably smug and arrogant toward the protagonist and becoming confused, dismayed, and in Rayfa's case angry when they are repeatedly proven wrong. Both appear repeatedly throughout their games' cases as well, gradually becoming more and more frustrated and dismayed as they are forced to confront the reality that they aren't as infallible as they like to believe.

Now, I want to get into some more specific contrasts and comparisons. To keep this organized, I'll split things up into a few major categories.

    SIMILARITIES

    • Both Sebastian and Rayfa have some very complicated, turbulent relationships with their parents. Sebastian's mother is assumed dead, and there's a heavy implication that his father, PIC Chairman Blaise Debeste killed her, or at the very least had her killed. Blaise himself is a monstrously abusive sack of evil garbage who has gone out of his way to turn his idiot son into the arrogant little weasel that he is and set him up to inevitably fail. He mocks, belittles, and threatens Sebastian to his blackened heart's content, all with an insufferably vile smirk on his face.

    • Rayfa, meanwhile, is the crown princess and royal priestess of the Kingdom of Khura'in, and the (assumed) daughter of the cartoonishly evil queen, Ga'ran. Much like Blaise Debeste, Ga'ran is a cruel, abusive parent with no particular reservations about insulting and mocking her daughter on all fronts.

    • Both Sebastian and Rayfa eventually mature enough to stand up against their abusive parents, helping to ensure their ultimate downfall even through great emotional distress.

    DIFFERENCES

    • On a more positive note for Rayfa, she also has her "father", Justice Minister Inga. Although we don't learn any of this until after Inga's death, it's heavily implied that he was actually quite a caring, doting father toward Rayfa, and his ambitious plan to enact a coup against his wife may actually have been intended to seize power for Rayfa, rather than for himself.

    • Sebastian spends most of Investigations 2's narrative as more of a side character, with Judge Courtney accompanying him and more effectively providing the game's "rival" role by correcting his nonsensical arguments to arrive at roughly the same conclusions, though in a much more sensible fashion. Rayfa, on the other hand, is one of the central characters of the Khura'in storyline, at least until the game's final trial, when she sort of drops off in importance. That also marks the point at which her character arc takes a partial shift to much more strongly resemble Sebastian's. More on that in a bit.

    MY OWN THOUGHTS

    • With both Sebastian and Rayfa, I went into their games expecting to hate them. Both managed to partially win me over by the end of their first appearances, however, if for different reasons.

    • I mentioned that Rayfa takes a backseat in importance in the final case of AA6, her character arc shifting much closer to a match for Sebastian's. I stand by that, and I want to comment on how much it annoys me. Rayfa was critically important to Cases 1 and 3, and we spent a lot of time in Case 3 specifically on examining the way that her courtroom encounters with Phoenix were affecting her. The steely confidence she'd spent her life building up was repeatedly damaged, and between that and the discovery of her parents' vile actions in Case 3, she found herself in a seriously rough place mentally. Maya's best scene in the game has her sitting the princess down for a personal talk about her future and responsibilities, with Maya drawing on her own experiences as the heir to the title of Master back home in Kurain Village. In Case 5, however, Rayfa's importance is majorly downgraded, and her appearances throughout the final trial effectively just change her into a note-for-note retread of Sebastian's character arc from the last two cases of Investigations 2. The most frustrating part, however, is why this happens. After Phoenix has been the player character of both of the game's two previous Khura'in cases, Apollo abruptly becomes the lead character for AA6's finale, and this means that he is suddenly the one coaching Rayfa through her personal struggles despite the two only having just met less than a day prior to the trial itself, and barely ever speaking, at that. The bonding that Rayfa did with Phoenix in Case 3 is totally thrown out, and Apollo gives her nothing to work with because there's no foundation like that between them.

    • To avoid focusing entirely on my problem with the tail end of Rayfa's storyline, let's turn back to earlier in AA6, and in AAI2 as well. Comparing the semi-rival roles that the two characters take on, I find that Rayfa is much more tolerable than Sebastian throughout all of her pre-endgame appearances. Yes, she can be a bratty, arrogant annoyance, but her façade cracks easily, which can lead to both hilarious tantrums and genuinely heartfelt moments of Phoenix or Maya helping her through her low self-esteem. Sebastian's an idiot, and doesn't tend to learn anything from being repeatedly proven wrong. Instead, he whines and protests until Justine steps in and coddles him from having to face any actual challenge against his mountain of arrogance. This leans into a past criticism I've made of Sebastian (which also affects some other rivals in the series), in that he's simply in too damn much of the game prior to his character arc finally beginning near the very end of Case 4. For him to actually grow and mature at all, it takes until the endgame and his long-winded Logic Chess pep talk from Edgeworth, who has inexplicably transformed into a therapist just for that one single sequence. Contrast this with Rayfa and Phoenix, who very believably bond throughout Case 3 of AA6 despite their relationship starting off as entirely hostile to one another, and Rayfa annoying Phoenix to no end early on.

So, what are your thoughts on these two characters (and my viewpoints on them)?

The prosecutor we need (at least I do),but probably will never get.

    Posted: 24 Dec 2020 10:27 AM PST

The polite and kind one. Who doesn't insult or nicknames the Judge/protagonist/witnesses,even when the second's theory fails, like:"I'm verry sorry,Mr. Justice (for example),but your theory doesn't quite hold water. Please try again." (the same with fails and penalties). And it bugs me,that devs probably wanted to do it with Nahyuta, but in the end we got a guy,WHO JUST DOESN'T STOP INSULTING LAWYERS AROUND HIM,JESUS CHRI– Ok,I hope you get the point.

Is Edgeworth wearing a cravat or a jabot?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2020 07:38 AM PST

I recently looked up pictures of cravats and I didn't find anything that looked like Edgeworth's famous neckpiece.

Now with some more searching I found a neckpiece called a jabot which actually looks like the famous thing Edgeworth holds around his neck.

Is there a explanation on why his frilly thing is called a cravat rather than a jabot?
