My thoughts on Ema Skye in Rise From The Ashes (PW:AA E5)

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 07:33 PM PDT

I don't like Ema Skye that much. Ema is annoying at times. She's always "ScIeNtIfiC" and always adding notes to her self. It's annoying. Now I've only seen her in Rise From The Ashes so idk how she is in other games if she's in them. But, in Rise From The Ashes, she's annoying and I don't see how people like her. If she gets better tell me in which games as I would like to see how she is.

A question regarding the law system in the series

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 03:53 PM PDT

I'm currently replaying the whole series and I just finished Turnabout Serenade (4-3). At the end of the trial, there's a little bit of dialogue that sounded pretty dumb to me:

    Judge:

Today's trial raises a delicate issue with our legal system. "The only thing definite in a court of law is evidence." This is the golden rule. However...

    Klavier:

...It has become apparent that not all things can be tried by this standard.

    Judge:

Should another case of this sort surface, we may have to consider an alternate system by which to administer justice.

This is referring to the fact that Apollo had no decisive evidence and the trial ended only thanks to Daryan indirectly confessing his crime (by publicly begging Machi not to talk) and not because of the other pile of proven facts amounted against him. How is it that it's this trial that makes the Judge realize there's "a delicate issue" with their legal system? I feel like 90% of the cases (if not 100%) so far have been cases where it has been really evident, as Klavier puts it, that they can't try everything with that standard. 3-3 comes to mind, where Phoenix literally bluffs about having decisive evidence to trick Furio Tigre into confessing himself, and this is the same Judge working for both cases. Am I wrong? Did I miss something about other cases that doesn't apply to this one? Or is it just as simple as the Judge finally coming to realize what he should've realized long ago?

    AA7 Final Case Idea

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 03:14 PM PDT

I just thought of this and it's not fleshed out at all but here we go.

The victim (doesn't matter who they are) was whipped to death... you see where this is going?

Franziska von Karma is the defendant (and a not guilty one at that). And because it's the final case, Edgeworth is prosecuting. Idk what else would happen in the case, I just like the idea of Franziska coming back as the defendant. In investigations 1, a bunch of characters reference how they've been accused of murder before Edgeworth, Gumshoe, and Kaye specifically and Franziska says she won't ever let herself be put in that position.

Also for some reason I need Apollo and Franziska to interact. Idk why, maybe Apollo could perceive Franziska's insecurities?

If anyone has any more ideas for this case, I'd love to hear them.

    Phoenix Wright mechanics

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 12:17 PM PDT

Hello! As a big fan of these games, I was wondering which mechanics do you think they are missing? I'm trying to do a fun game along with some friends, but we wanted to add something so that the game isn't just like the originals (without having so many things that it's totally different). So, we want to keep the basics, and work onto it.

I mean, maybe trials could be done in a more dynamic way, by having you go through several thoughts in order to explain why did you show a certain evidence instead of Phoenix doing it all by himself (something like last two game's Revisualisation). Or maybe more minigames like the magatama's one.

What do you think? And thank you so much in advance :)

Most common murder methods in the series (all games except DGS1 and 2 and PWvsPL)

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 01:26 AM PDT

Heya, everyone. I recently became curious about if the Ace Attorney series tends to favor a particular cause of death over the others. To investigate this question, I've mapped out the distribution of murder methods throughout the series. Below is a table containing a list of all cases that went to trial in-game, including the related incidents which play a substantial role in the in-game trials, and the respective cause of death for each. For our purposes, we consider these categories: stabbing, gunshot trauma, blunt force trauma due to an object, blunt force trauma due to falling, strangulation and asphyxiation, electrocution, and poisoning. For simplicity, the PWvsPL cases are not included, as the in-game universe is not realistic, and none of the characters were actually killed.

    Case Method
    1-1 Blunt Trauma
    1-2 Blunt Trauma
    1-3 Stabbing
    1-4 (Main) Shooting
    1-4 (DL-6) Shooting
    1-5 (Main) Stabbing
    1-5 (SL-9) Stabbing
    2-1 Falling
    2-2 Shooting
    2-3 Blunt Trauma
    2-4 Strangulation
    3-1 Electrocution
    3-2 Blunt Trauma
    3-3 Poisoning
    3-4 Stabbing
    3-5 Stabbing
    4-1 Blunt Trauma
    4-2 Shooting
    4-3 Shooting
    4-4 Poisoning
    5-1 Blunt Trauma
    5-2 Stabbing
    5-3 Stabbing
    5-4 Stabbing
    5-5 (UR-1) Stabbing
    5-6 Falling
    6-1 Blunt Trauma
    6-2 Stabbing
    6-3 (Day 1) Stabbing
    6-3 (Day 2) Stabbing
    6-4 Asphyxiation
    6-5 (Day 1) Blunt Trauma
    6-5 (Day 2) Stabbing
    6-6 Blunt Trauma
    AAI-1 Shooting
    AAI-2 Falling
    AAI-3 Shooting
    AAI-4 (Rell) Shooting
    AAI-4 (Faraday) Stabbing
    AAI-5 (KG-8) Stabbing
    AAI-5 (Coachen) Stabbing
    AAI-5 (DeMasque II) Blunt Trauma
    AAI2-1 Shooting
    AAI2-2 Stabbing
    AAI2-3 Blunt Trauma
    AAI2-4 Blunt Trauma
    AAI2-5 Crushing
    AAI2-5 (SS-5, Huang) Stabbing
    AAI2-5 (SS-5, Cameron) Blunt Trauma

Here are the counts and percentages (out of 47 total deaths):

    Stabbing: 18 (36.7%)

    Blunt Trauma: 13 (26.5%)

    Shooting: 9 (18.4%)

    Falling: 3 (6.2%)

    Strangulation/Asphyxiation: 2 (4.1%)

    Poisoning: 2 (4.1%)

    Electroution: 1 (2%)

    Crushing: 1 (2%)

These results are surprising to me. For some reason, I expected blunt trauma to lead the pack, but death by stab wounds was slightly farther ahead. I believe this is because blunt trauma is more evenly spread out across the series than stabbing; cases with fatal stab wounds tend to conglomerate around one another.

Approximately 82% of the deaths in these games are attributable to stab wounds, blunt force trauma, or gunshot wounds. Cases without these death types are often memorable due to their uniqueness in cause of death; for example, 3-1 contained the only electrocution death of the series, and this fact partially helps the case to stand out in my memory. In terms of "creativity" of the cause of death, the most creative games are JFA and T&T, each with two unusual murder methods. Conversely, the least creative game is the original, with seven individuals falling to the more conventional methods.

For cases in the main series with multiple victims' deaths being investigated, there is a trend of each victim dying by the same method. This occurs directly in 1-4, 1-5, 5-4/5-5, and 6-3. In contrast, the AAI games reject this trend, and instead have each case with multiple victims die by different methods. The only case where there is a similar cause of death is AAI-5, where Cece Yew and Coachen both are stabbed to death, though DeMasque II does die differently (by blunt force trauma, to be specific).

A final point of interest from my observations on this data is the variability in the methods in each game. As expected, each game has a different spread in terms of the types of methods used. The most homogenous game is DD, which uses only two different causes of death in the main game (three if the DLC episode is included). There are several games with high spread; JFA, T&T, AAI, and AAI2 each have four different types. The fact that the newer games are more straightforward/less variable in their killing methodology seems to indicate that the developers are attempting to be more creative with the basic methods, which is certainly evidenced by 6-2.

That's all from me for now. I hope you found the data and my observations interesting. Please let me know if you draw any fascinating conclusions of your own. These types of studies into the distributions found in Ace Attorney are always captivating and would love to know what you see in this data that I don't.

Rethinking the cross examinations in Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 07:44 AM PDT

The way they work is that you have multiple witnesses and while you're pressing one witness, some other witness will make a very audible noise. This means that you can catch that other witness deep in thought about what was just said.

Let's rethink this. Instead of that, you have someone standing next to you who can perceive things like relief, nervosity and anger in people when they're not talking. Be it through their breath or some other way. I'm not really gonna elaborate on that. Then you can see a graph showing how the witnesses feel about the statements being said right now. On this graph you can then pinpoint unusual things about how the witnesses feel about what one witness is saying and question them on that. It's not a mood matrix, it's one graph that shows how everyone feels (admittedly I haven't thought of what the graph would look like)
